A man has been charged in connection to a hit-and-run that occurred in New York City on Thanksgiving that killed one person and wounded several others.
The driver, 24-year-old Brooklynite Michael McBean, was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of the accident, which resulted in a death, obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct, according to Ameri Publications.
The incident began around 7:15 a.m. when McBean was travelling northbound on Pennsylvania Avenue in a white 2010 Mercedes Benz when he hit a Nissan Murano that stopped at a light, then struck 56-year-old Yvette Molina.
"She was driving and he hit her on the side so he hit the lady and then hit it from the side knocked her over the divider and caused the other cars to collide trying to get away," one witness said.
McBean was eventually captured by police while trying to flee on foot, trying to carjack cars as they were moving, but only after causing a chain reaction at a red light by hitting a Dodge Caravan that, in turn, hit a Dodge Charger, which then hit an Audi Q7, according to the New York Daily News.
"He was running in the traffic like he was trying to literally get himself killed," said Kyra Schuler, of East New York. "He got hit by car and he went down, got up went back into traffic and tried to get hit again."
McBean was taken to Brookdale Hospital for treatment, while Molina was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where she later died.
At least 10 other people were reportedly hurt during the incident, but the extent of their injuries are unknown, CBS New York reported.
In the meantime, police are trying to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
