75 Percent Of Americans Don't Want Most Congressional Republicans Re-Elected

Nearly 75 percent of Americans do not believe most Republicans in Congress deserve to be re-elected according to another CNN poll conducted during the past few days, adding to the negative reputation the GOP quickly garnered since the wake of the government shutdown, CNN reported.

While three-fourths of participants said most congressional Republicans don't deserve to represent them on Capitol Hill, only 54 percent said most Democrats don't deserve another term in office -- demonstrating a 21-percentage point difference.

"Although incumbent members of Congress of both parties are not very popular, the shutdown seems to have only affected views of GOP incumbents," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

A majority of participants also said that the GOP's policies are too extreme and demonstrate Democrats having an 8-point advantage over Republicans in the fight for control of Congress, though the 2014 elections are still a year away.

"We're a long way away from saying that the Democrats have a chance to regain control of the House," Holland added. "There is more than a year to go before any votes are actually cast and the 'generic ballot' question is not necessarily a good predictor of the actual outcome of 435 separate elections. A year before the 2010 midterms, for example, the Democrats held a 6-point lead on the generic ballot."

Only one in five surveyed said most Republicans deserve to be re-elected while 42 percent said the same about Democrats.

The CNN/IRC International poll was conducted on Friday through Sunday and released on Monday, just days after the 2013 government shutdown -- which has specifically been blamed on Republicans -- was finally lifted.

Most participants said President Barack Obama was the bigger winner in the shutdown deal and eight in 10 said the shutdown was bad for the country, leading to a loss of confidence and satisfaction in government.

In addition, more than seven in 10 think that another shutdown is likely.

A poll released yesterday by CNN said that a majority of Americans would like to see Speaker John Boehener to be replaced in addition to 54 percent of participants saying the Republican-controlled House is a negative thing.
