Two Australian surfers are feared dead in Mexico after disappearing in Sinaloa last week, according to CNN News. Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were due to arrive in the Mexican city of Guadalajara on Friday Nov. 20, but the discovery of what appears to be their burned-out van containing two unidentified bodies has left their families fearing the worst, according to BBC News.
Lucas and Coleman, both 33 and living in Edmonton, Canada, had driven to Mexico for a surfing trip, but the discovery of a charred van resembling theirs in the state of Sinaloa, an area known for a significant amount of drug-related gang crime, has led to the men's families becoming worried, according to reports by The Independent.
Andrea Gomez and Josie Cox, Coleman and Lucas' respective partners, intend to go to Sinaloa with personal items from their boyfriends that may help identify the bodies found in the damaged van. A joint statement from the families of both men also gave intention to travel to Mexico and referenced their "deep fears" at what they might find, according to BBC News.
"Everything points to it being them because the van matches: it had a bicycle," Gomez said according to The Independent, adding that nothing is confirmed yet. She is reportedly taking "pieces of dreadlocks" given to her by Coleman, while Cox is bringing Lucas' dental records to help with the case.
Cox posted a message on Facebook saying that she was devastated after learning that Lucas intended to propose to her following the trip, according to MSN News, and told the media that "I definitely don't doubt that there's something that's happened, something that we should be worried about."
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help finance the travel expenses of the two women and the men's families, which has so far raised more than $40,000.
