Istanbul Pipe Bomb Injures 5

A pipe bomb exploded on an overpass near an Istanbul metro station on Tuesday, injuring five people and halting some of the city's trains, according to Reuters.

The bomb went off near the Bayrampasa metro station during the evening rush hour. The residential and industrial area is on the European side of Istanbul, reported Reuters.

Footage of the blast shows a flash of light and burning embers raining down onto the traffic below. Many ambulances arrived, and commuters were escorted to safety, reported The Guardian. Because the trains run above ground in this area, many commuters walked home along the tracks.

This blast was smaller than the three that have hit the country in the past few months - the blast in Ankara killed 103 in October, reported the Guardian, and another in a smaller border town near Syria killed 33, according to Reuters.

The mayor of the affected area of Istanbul, Atilla Aydıner, spoke on television after the blast, according to The Guardian, and the grainy footage of the explosion has since been circulating on TV and the internet.

A policeman in Istanbul said that the bomb seemed handmade and was very small, reported CNBC.
