Even though she is still undergoing psychiatric treatment, 27-year-old Amanda Bynes is reportedly being given some days off in rehab after three months of intense care, FOX News reports. How is the actress doing now?
"Amanda is being given two passes a week to go the beach, or out to eat and do things like that, accompanied by a professional handler," a source told FOX411. "She is making great progress."
While the actress's diagnosis is still unknown, and likely will never be made public in order to protect her privacy, it has been reported that she's currently residing at a Malibu rehab facility which specializes in mental health treatment. The star was recently moved to the treatment center from UCLA Medical Center, as the hospital allegedly does not take on long-term cases.
Though some sources have leaked information about Bynes's life inside the facilities, her mother, Lynn, has asked that the media and the general public respect her daughter's privacy during this difficult time and refrain from discussing specifics of her illness, as much of it has been misconstrued, she claims.
"I would really like everyone out there to know that almost 99 percent of the things written about my daughter in various media outlets are false or misleading," Lynn told People magazine earlier this month. "Unless it's a statement issued by our family attorney, Tamar Arminak, please take everything you read about Amanda with a grain of salt."
After a life of doing children's television and teen films, Bynes eventually stopped working and led a relatively private life in New York City, though her constant Twitter rants about plastic surgery and the "ugliness" of various stars along with her bizarre public behavior and run-ins with the law quickly made her a highly publicized and controversial figure.
Fans and critics alike speculated over whether or not the star was feigning mental illness in order to promote herself or a new project, much as Joaquin Phoenix did when he manufactured a bearded, aspiring rap star persona and created an uproar.
But while Phoenix's persona was merely an elaborate hoax, Bynes's behavior is indicative of serious mental health problems.
After getting kicked out of her NYC apartment and relocating to her hometown of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Bynes was placed on an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold after setting fire to a stranger's driveway. Her worried parents had tried many times to reach out to her before in the midst of her public meltdown, but it wasn't until officials came into play that Lynn Bynes was able to petition for conservatorship over her daughter and her estate, though she withdrew it last month now that Bynes is fully in the state of California's care.
Bynes's parents have reportedly been making frequent trips to visit their daughter at the rehab facility despite their rocky relationship and playing a big part in her recovery.
And aside from one tweet about Drake that her reps insisted was the doing of a hacker, her Twitter has remained silent.
