The back-and-forth between over the fallout of the New England Patriots and New York Jets game continued on Wednesday. Jets coach Rex Ryan fired back at Patriots coach Bill Belichick for the latter's accusation that Gang Green also cheated on Sunday.
A penalty against the Patriots on a missed 56-yard field goal attempt by the Jets kept the drive alive on Sunday and eventually led to the Jets winning in overtime. The penalty, called on Patriots' Chris Jones for pushing teammate Will Svitek in to the line, became a topic of debate.
After the game, Belichick said he thought no penalty was warranted because the pushing wasn't from the second level. On Monday, he admitted he was wrong about his interpretation of the rule, and on Tuesday he indicated the Jets were guilty of committing the same penalty.
"Well, I mean, since they were using the play themselves I don't even know about all that," Belichick told reporters, via the New York Daily News. "But basically we're just moving on here."
Ryan, however, wasn't willing to give Belichick the last word.
"That's not true," Ryan said on Wednesday of Belichick's allegation, via ESPN. "He's got to make up his mind. Was he aware of this thing? Was it second-level, all this kind of jazz? Or now what the story is ... we did it? OK, I got you.
"The fact is we're moving on, we earned that victory plain and simple, and we're focused on Cincinnati now."
Belichick also irked Jets defensive end Quinton Coples, who Belichick appeared to be referring to in his remark.
"[Special-teams coordinator] Ben [Kotwica] did a great job teaching us what we can do and can't do and how to get a block on a field goal," Coples said, according to ESPN. "As far as [Belichick's] comment, I'm pas it. We won."
