New York Jets receiver Santonio Holmes suggested he may not return to the field until at least Week 11, when the team visits the Buffalo Bills.
"At this point I think the bye week has come at a great time," Holmes said on Thursday during his weekly presser, via New York Daily News. "Would me five, maybe six weeks to get healthy."
Asked if he would miss Week 8 and Week 9, Holmes said: "My question was answered the way it was answered. I don't (know how) you can get confused about the way I answered the question."
Asked if it meant he'd be sidelined until after the bye, Holmes answered: "I didn't say that. Don't put words in my mouth."
Holmes missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, and he hasn't participated at practice since suffering the injury on Sept. 29 against Tennessee. Holmes skipped the entire preseason to recover from two surgeries on his left foot; he returned for Week 1 and played through Week 4.
Through his four games, Holmes has 10 catches for 243 yards and one touchdown this season.
While the 29-year-old veteran wasn't specific with a timetable for his return, he did stress his cautiousness with returning too soon.
"That's one thing I don't want, any setbacks at this point," Holmes said during the presser, according to the Star-Ledger. "I already missed a full season last year (with a foot fracture) and I want to be back on the team to help these guys as much as possible. I think I would be a downside to the team if I put myself back on that list of being injured for the remainder of the season."
