The Washington Nationals missed out on acquiring Darren O'Day in free agency and the Colorado Rockies need all the help they can get after finishing last in the MLB with a horrid 5.04 team ERA.
According to the latest rumors, both clubs bolstered their bullpens on Tuesday.
The Nationals will reportedly sign Shawn Kelley, reports Jack Curry of the YES Network. Right now there are no other details regarding the deal, but it's no surprise Washington was looking to add a power arm to their bullpen.
Kelley played the 2015 season with the San Diego Padres after the New York Yankees traded him last offseason. He had the best season of his career with the Pads and finished 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 63 strikeouts in 53 games (51 1/3 innings).
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick said yesterday that 31-year-old right-hander was expected to be the next reliever off the board after Ryan Madson, Darren O'Day and Mark Lowe inked lucrative deals with other MLB clubs.
In Colorado, the Rockies added two relievers in an effort to improve their MLB-worst 4.70 bullpen ERA this past season. Jason Motte and Chad Qualls will join the Rockies, the team announced today.
Motte spent 2015 with the Chicago Cubs and Qualls was with the Houston Astros.
Rosenthal says Motte has a two-year, $10 million deal with the Rockies and Qualls has a two-year, $6 million pact.
The team has yet to disclose the contract details.
Motte, 33, went 8-1 with a 3.91 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 57 games (48 1/3 innings) with the Cubs last season.
Qualls, 37, finished 3-5 with a 4.38 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 60 games (49 1/3 innings) with the Astros last season.
Stay tuned for an official announcement on Kelley as well as the confirmed contract details for Motte and Qualls.
