George Zimmerman Won't Be Charged in Domestic Dispute With Estranged Wife

George Zimmerman will not be criminally charged in a domestic dispute with his estranged wife.

Lake Mary police ruled Wednesday that Zimmerman's case didn't reach the criminal level, the Associated Press reported.

The man who was acquitted during the heavily-covered shooting of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin will not be charged in the alleged theft of a king-sized bed and antique chair, along with a few other pieces of furniture that Zimmerman's mother-in-law Machelle Dean said he'd snatched from her residence in September. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the 29-year-old former neighborhood watch volunteer stayed with Dean for several months.

The items that Dean included in a police report filed last month detailed $4,400 worth of items - among them: a king-sized bed, leather furniture worth around $3,000 and an antique chair that belonged to the grandmother of his estranged wife. The police also included other housewares, and accused Zimmerman of vandalizing the kitchen by writing on the countertops and kitchen cabinets.

Department spokesperson Officer Zach Hudson told the Sentinel that the issue was a "civil dispute." He'd previously referred to the case as a landlord-tenant dispute.

Zimmerman and his estranged wife Shellie split up on Aug. 13, and engaged in a public argument a few weeks later, on Sept. 9. She called the police, and said that her then-husband was threatening her and her father while they were trying to move certain personal items from the house. Police briefly questioned Zimmerman once they arrived at the scene, Time reported.

Police tried to get a hold of video from Shellie's iPad, where she recorded parts of the confrontation, but Zimmerman reportedly got rid of the evidence beforehand.

George Zimmerman was acquitted by a Seminole County jury in July in the murder of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Martin's death prompted a wave of backlash from the public on police brutality, racial violence and the laws of Florida. Nationwide debate and coverage was sparked as a result of the Zimmerman case.
