Pinterest has signed a deal with Getty Images to bring in more context and details to its pinned pictures.
While a picture is worth a thousand words, sometimes words describing the picture add more value to it. Pinterest believes in bringing more details about the pinned images to its users and has signed a deal with Getty Images to make that possible. With the deal, Pinterest users will be able to enjoy the Getty Images metadata, including the description of the image, photographer and date when the photo was taken. Pinterest will pay Getty Images to use these details alongside its vast library of images.
Pinterest is focusing on bringing more written context to its users in addition to its image library. This is yet another step in bringing all the necessary information about an image, if the description and links are not enough.
"One thing we've found is that the more we know about a pin, the more valuable we can make it for you," wrote Michael Yamartino, a product manager at Pinterest, on the company's blog,Friday. "That's why we've been working with partners to get more data into Pinterest to help us make recommendations, make pins more useful, and even offer notifications when prices drop."
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the metadata will be added to Pinterest collection in the coming months. In addition, Pinterest will ensure that the data shared on the site gets proper attribution.
Getty Images echoed Pinterest's words in its own blog, Friday. "We'll get a photo credit for our images on Pinterest's site and a link back. Pinterest users get more context and have more fun," the company said.
