North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is sending his personal girl band, Moranbong, to perform in Beijing for a week of shows.
Moranbong, "a model of the Juche-based literature and art and a worldwide stylish band, will soon give friendship performances in China," the North Korean state news agency KCNA reported, according to CNN.
Members of the band, which was established in 2012, are said to be hand-picked by Kim. The all-female band are noted for their synthesizer-backed musical tributes about the dictator's "warm heart" and "sweet smile." The group, scheduled to perform at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, "opened up a new path in art creation with the spirit of devotedly carrying out the tasks given by the Party," KCNA added, according to litwns.com.
China recently announced a $156 million border trade zone with North Korea, and Liu Yunshan, the fifth-highest-ranking official in the Chinese Communist Party, has visited the nation, reports Newsmax.
The performance by the band is relevant at a time when the U.N. Security Council is scheduled to discuss human rights violations in North Korea, often perpetrated by the government on its own people. China with a veto power might prove an ally to North Korea in the proceedings.
