Giant Salamander: Rare Amphibian Found In Chinese Cave, Excites Researchers

A giant salamander has been found in China, weighing in at over 100 pounds, according to the Daily Mail. This rare and historic find was discovered in a cave in Chongqing. The impressive beast is 4ft 7in and weights about 114 pounds.

Animal experts conclude that the amphibian is around 200 years old. The salamander is under national protection as an endangered species and has since been transferred to a facility in order to be protected and studied, according to People's Daily Online.

Because salamanders are slow and easy to capture, they are often targeted by poachers, who sell the rare animals as a delicacy or to be used in medicines.

The salamander is currently the largest species of amphibian in the world, with the ability to grow up to about 6ft in length, according to Edge of Existence. It is also an ancient animal, with researchers finding fossils of the creatures in the age of dinosaurs.

The animals have the ability to regenerate, an arduously researched science that many researchers believe could hold the key to human regeneration, according to a previous report from HNGN.
