The Cincinnati Reds had some trade discussions involving third baseman Todd Frazier at the MLB Winter Meetings, but it didn't seem like the talks progressed an awful lot. However, the latest rumors find things are "heating up" regarding scenarios involving the veteran.
A number of clubs reportedly spoke with the Reds about Frazier, but the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians have perhaps emerged as the most likely destinations after rumors suggested both teams expressed serious interest last week.
"Trade talks are starting to percolate with Todd Frazier as Cincinnati continues to talk to teams about the star third baseman," writes Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
"The White Sox and Indians were thought to be among the teams most heavily involved at last week's Winter Meetings, with the Nationals, Royals, Dodgers, Rangers and Angels among teams believed to have some involvement or interest."
Perhaps the talks are beginning to materialize a bit. Over the weekend Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said the Reds wanted "way too much" for Frazier, which is no surprise since they're trying to rebuild. That asking price is believed to be a team's top pitching prospect and top position prospect.
Frazier is under club control through the 2017 season and has been among the best third baseman in the MLB over the past four years. Over that span he's averaged 72 runs scored, 25 home runs and 77 RBI and logged an OPS of .795 or greater in three out of those four campaigns.
Various trade rumors surrounded Frazier during the 2015 season, but it wasn't clear if the Reds were willing to move him at that point because that would ultimately indicate the team is entering a rebuilding period. Frazier is also a fan favorite in Cincinnati, so moving him may not please the team's customers.
However, under new general manager Dick Williams, the Reds could be moving in a new direction, as reports this offseason indicate the team is "open for business" and willing to discuss trade scenarios involving any of their players.
Frazier would probably bring back the biggest return due to his age and cost-efficiency, which is something the Reds might be hoping to capitalize on before its too late. After all, they already failed to maximize the value of Aroldis Chapman and are probably looking to avoid that with their coveted players in the future.
