NASA is now taking applications for its newest round of astronauts, with full-time positions that include missions to Mars, according to Time.
"Today, we opened the application process for our next class of astronauts, extraordinary Americans who will take the next giant leap in exploration," said Charles Bode, a NASA administrator. "This group will launch to space from U.S. soil on American-made spacecraft and blaze the trail on our journey to the Red Planet."
The annual salary for the position ranges from $66,000 to $145,000; flying experience and advanced degrees are not required for the position, nor is military experience or perfect vision, leaving open plenty of opportunity for people from all walks of life. However, NASA does require that applicants have a bachelor's degree in biological science, engineering, physical science, computer science or mathematics, according to The International Business Times. Furthermore, three years of relevant professional experience with promotions showing an increased level of responsibility are required, according to Patch.
NASA's astronauts get plenty of benefits including holidays off, health care and paid leave, although the fast evolution of space travel and recent advancements make the exciting field more than enough incentive for most people.
"More new human spacecraft are in development in the United States than at any time in history," NASA said. "Future astronaut candidates will have the opportunity to explore farther in space than humans have ever been."
Future space explorers have until February 18 to submit an application.
