After a nine-game road trip, the Rangers are finally set to have their first home game of the season in the newly renovated Madison Square Garden. New York escaped its lengthy string of road games with a 3-6-0 record, something Rangers coach Alain Vigneault admitted he's glad to put behind him.
"It's been a challenge. We don't have the record we want, but we saw some strides in the right direction," Vigneault told reporters, via ESPN. "I know everybody is looking forward to getting in front of our great fans and playing a few home games."
New York can look forward to playing five of its next six games at home. The team can also look forward to seeing goalie Henrik Lundqvist return to action, ESPN reports. The goalie missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury before returning to practice on Sunday. Although he's 2-4-0 with a 3.45 GAA in seven games this season, Lundqvist is excited about returning to the ice in front of the home crowd.
"I definitely want to play Monday," he said after Saturday's win. "The home opener, play in front of our fans, that's my goal."
Montreal, meanwhile, is looking to add a fourth straight win against New York after sweeping the three games played last season. The Canadiens are 6-5-0, led by Tomas Plekanec's five goals and P.K. Subban's 11 assists.
Canadiens goalkeeper Carey Price has allowed just three goals in his past two games; he shutout the Rangers in both of their previous two meetings last season.
