Seattle Seahawks Rumors: Percy Harvin Nearing Return; Sidney Rice Out With Torn ACL, Released After 2013 Season

Seattle Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin is listed as "day-to-day" as he nears his return after undergoing hip surgery. Sidney Rice, who's done for the season with a torn ACL, appears likely to be released from the Seahawks in the offseason.

Harvin returned to practice on Oct. 22. He was on track to play Monday night until his hip "flared up" last Thursday, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports. The setback wasn't serious, and depending on how this week of practice goes, Harvin could play on Sunday against Tampa Bay.

"It's all day-to-day," Harvin said last week, via ESPN. "I want to play as soon as possible, but we all want to be smart in this thing. We put a plan together and we're just going to take it day by day and see how it feels."

Rice, meanwhile, is finished for the season after tearing his ACL on Monday against St. Louis. His career in Seattle is likely finished too, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

"With Rice suffering in late October a multi-month knee injury that necessarily will limit him through the offseason and into 2014, the Seahawks could decide to move on, unless Rice will agree to a major reduction in his big-money deal," Florio wrote on Tuesday.

"Rice is due to earn a base salary of $8.5 million in 2014, an amount that his past performance and current health won't justify. With a post-June 1 designation, the Seahawks could shed the contract with a $1.2 million cap charge in 2014 and 2014, according to a source with knowledge of the deal."

Florio cited the large contracts looming around the corner that Seattle must sign as the reason to release Rice. Cornerback Richard Sherman becomes a free agent in 2015, and quarterback Russell Wilson follows in 2016; both would likely want to sign an extension before their current deals expire.

With Rice under contract until 2016 and needing time to recover from surgery, cutting him in the offseason to save money makes sense. The 27-year-old's performance since signing with Seattle in 2011 doesn't help his cause - through three seasons, Rice has caught just 97 passes for 1,463 yards and 12 touchdowns.
