Gillette Sues Dollar Shave Club Over Stolen Patent

The war of the patents is on in the shaving world, as Gillette is suing its biggest competitor, Dollar Shave Club, for allegedly stealing a patent for razor technology, according to Fortune.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, and it alleges that Dollar Shave Club infringed on a 2004 patent for a chrome overcoat to Gillette's razors, according to The Washington Post.

Gillette is demanding that Dollar Shave Club stops selling all products with the chrome-containing overcoat, CNNMoney reported.

"We invest significantly in developing the best shaving technology in the world -- so we don't take it lightly when competitors illegally use our patented technology. This lawsuit seeks to stop this violation of our intellectual property immediately," Gillette spokeswoman Kara Buckley said.

Gillette is still the number one seller of razors, dominating 60 percent of the retail market, Fortune noted. Dollar Shave Club, however, is slowly but surely increasing its reach.

Gillette began production in 1901, while Dollar Shave Club is a relatively new company, coming into creation in 2012. The company is also seeking monetary damages on top of the court order.

Dollar Shave Club has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit, according to CNN Money.
