Houston Texans backup quarterback T.J. Yates has reportedly suffered a torn ACL, according ESPN's Tania Ganguli. The Texans were without quarterback Brian Hoyer this Sunday, as he had been ruled out with a head injury and was still in the concussion protocol. Now Houston has lost Yates for the season due to an ACL injury, according to NFL reporter John McClain.
The Texans backup quarterback suffered the knee injury on a scramble on the final drive of the first half in the contested matchup against AFC South rival the Indianapolis Colts. Houston is currently leading Indianapolis in the fourth quarter 13-10, and backup quarterback Brandon Weeden has stepped up in Yates absence and has completed 10 of 16 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
The Texans claimed Weeden one day after being released by the Dallas Cowboys, and the team will now have to start looking for other options at quarterback, as no one currently sits behind Weeden on their roster. It's unclear how long Hoyer will be out, but Houston will need him back as soon as possible as he has been a key part of their offense this season.
Hoyer has proven himself as a legitimate starter in his first year in Houston and has thrown for 2,357 yards with 18 touchdowns to six interceptions. Houston is currently in a close game with the Colts, and the winner of Sunday's matchup will control their own playoff destiny.
