Google is starting to pickup steam on making its enigmatic wearable eye accessory, the Google Glass, a staple in every day life. Months before the device is set to go from a prototype to a full blown product, complete with a release date, the company is adding a new accessory to the already eye-catching wearable tech - an earbud.
According to ZDNet, earlier on Wednesday, the company published what looks to be the first of a series of images for the next version of the smartglass eyewear prototype. There aren't many other noticeable upgrades to the device besides what was expected in terms of tweaks. The biggest news is the inclusion of the new "mono earbud" which was unveiled by the company with the release of the images. The new product will be made available to Glass Explorers, the company's name for the 8,000 people it currently has testing the device in the field.
On Tuesday the Internet and tech giant announced that it would be expanding its Google Glass Explorer program by allowing each person who is currently signed up the chance to recruit three more people. Those three people will still need pay the $1,500 price tag for the device itself however, when they do they'll receive an updated version of the prototype that can accommodate the mono earbud. That isn't to say those who were among the original Google Explorers are going to be left out, they can trade in their devices the first chance they get for free.
Google also announced that when the product finally does go live, these people will be able to trade in their prototypes for real retail versions.
It's unclear what more hardware will mean for the Google Glass' statement as a fashion symbol or exactly what the functions of the earbud will be. Only time will tell as users begin to roll out with the device and test it around the world.
