The woman who drove her car through a crowd on the Las Vegas Strip near the Paris Las Vegas Hotel on Sunday night, killing one and injuring 37, was identified as Lakeisha N. Holloway, 24, and law enforcement and witnesses are calling the incident "intentional."
Of the 37 injured in the crash, six were in critical but stable condition, according to ABC News. A 3-year-old in the car that was with Holloway was unharmed.
According to witnesses, the suspect was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile sedan with Oregon license plates when the car jumped onto the sidewalk at different spots to hit pedestrians before going back down the road, according to CNN.
"It was mayhem, and it was very intentional," said Justin Cochrane, a tourist who was having dinner on the Strip, according to Reuters. "People were flying. This child I saw, literally, hit, and the sound, I'll never forget."
Bystanders rushed to help bleeding victims and tried to punch into the woman's car to stop her, but she just kept "mowing people down," witness Antonio Nassar told CNN.
Holloway fled the scene but was later arrested and was tested for drug and alcohol use.
"This was not an act of terrorism," said Brett Zimmerman, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department deputy chief. "We are treating this as an intentional act."
The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. PST as the Miss Universe pageant was nearing its conclusion the nearby Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
The portion of Las Vegas Boulevard between Flamingo and Harmon roads was closed for the night and reopened Monday morning,
Holloway is currently detained and is expected to be charged within a few hours.
