Say goodbye to Shane MacGowan's toothless grin! The Pogues singer has finally got himself a new set of teeth, including a gold tooth, years after he lost them to drugs and alcohol abuse, according to The Metro.
MacGowan, who co-wrote The Pogues' biggest hit "A Fairytale of New York," underwent a nine-hour surgery to be fitted with a brand new set of teeth. The surgical procedure was aired on TV on Sunday as part of a documentary titled "Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn."
In 2008, the musician lost his last two natural teeth that left him with an "empty mouth" and a "distinct lisp." MacGowan got a set of dentures fitted a year later but described the fitting as "a botch job," according to The Independent.
The singer finally decided to go through the dental surgery on the insistence of his girlfriend, Victoria Clarke.
Describing the surgery as an "Everest of dentistry," MacGowan's dentist, Dr. Darragh Mulrooney, said that the operation was "as big as it gets" and required a "whole team to get to the summit."
"Shane recorded most of his great works when he had some teeth to work with. The question on everyone's lips is how it will affect his voice ... We've effectively retuned his instrument and that will be an ongoing process," said Mulrooney, according to The Guardian.
"There was a moving moment when someone gave Shane an apple to eat ... something he hadn't done in 20 years," he added.
