Unregistered Sex Offender Arrested at Halloween Trick-or-Treat Event, Witnesses Say Stranger Tried Shoving Candy into Kids' Bags

An unregistered sex offender wearing a costume was arrested on Thursday for reportedly bothering children at a Halloween event in the San Diego, Calif. area.

29-year-old Danny Shaw was taken into police custody for investigation of being a sex offender harassing children and failing to register as a sex offender, according to the Associated Press.

Shaw was at the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Main Street Trick or Treat Event on Halloween night wearing white face paint with red stripes meant to look like streams of blood.

He was reportedly standing on the corner of Main Street and Montecito Road, near an estimated 1,000 children who reportedly attended the small town's celebration.

According to a San Diego County Sheriff's Department press released obtained by Examiner, the man was heckling children and their parents, insisting they take candy from him. One witness told the police that Shaw was approaching families incessantly, trying to hand them the treats. Many parents declined.

At one point, he was seen slipping sweets into one of the children's bags as they turned and walked away from him, the Examiner reported.

Authorities reported that Shaw is a sex offender from Oregon who did not register for his crimes, then moved to California in February of this year.
