The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) assisted Adams County investigators in early December in seizing 148 dogs and 18 cats from horrific living conditions on a property in Adams County, Ohio. The deplorable conditions of the property and animals of the Sugar Bear Dog and Cat Rescue show years of neglect, according to WLWT. Among the animals seized was a very special dog whose family had spent five years looking for.
Among the sick and injured dogs was a silly boisterous Chocolate Labrador chained near the front of the property, with his chain tangled in a rotting deer carcass that served as his food source. Once the animals were safely back at the HSUS, they were each scanned for a microchip, as is protocol for HSUS. And this wonderful Chocolate Lab had a chip and name- Chuckie.
See the tear-jerking reunion when the HSUS team took Chuckie home for the first time in five years, home to a life where he is not chained, home to a life where he gets real food, a loving family he missed and a life worth living that can erase the last five years stolen from him.
"Animals shouldn't have to suffer in such conditions, and we are glad that these dogs and cats will have the chance at a fresh start. We are thankful for the help of the local and national groups involved in this case," The Adams County Commissioners said in a joint statement, according to Loving Dogs Daily. "Rescuers removed the animals from the property pending the final disposition of this case. At a temporary emergency animal shelter, the animals will be thoroughly examined and receive any necessary immediate medical treatment."
