It's been a Christmas weekend many Australians will never forget. Bushfires burned through more than 100 homes in and around Melbourne, Australia over the weekend, according to The New York Times, and it doesn't look like the fires will die down anytime soon.
Residents of Australia's Victoria state have, slowly but surely, made it back to their homes, according to the BBC. Previous evacuation orders were lifted for these areas, but not for others.
Residents of Wye River and Separation Creek didn't have much to come home to, their homes and businesses lost to the flames.
More than 500 firefighters and 13 firefighting helicopters have been sent in to survey the damage, halt the fires and check for survivors - but it wasn't just humans they were looking for.
A koala bear was saved by firefighters alone the Victorian coast this weekend, according to the Guardian. "We understand that at the moment looking for animals is a low priority, but at this stage we just need people to look out for bushfire-affected animals," said Wildlife Victoria's Amy Hidge.
These rampant bushfires began on Dec. 19 as a result of a lightning strike. Since then, the fire has burned through more than 4,900 acres.
