Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane is facing allegations of sexual assault from a young woman in Buffalo, according to a Sunday afternoon report from Lou Michel and Tim Graham of The Buffalo News.
"Evander Kane, a Buffalo Sabres left winger, is the subject of a sex offense investigation by Buffalo police over an incident that allegedly occurred Sunday morning in a downtown hotel room near First Niagara Center, three police sources have told The Buffalo News."
Kane has not yet been charged with a crime. One police source indicated to The News that the investigation was "ongoing," and they didn't expect it to be resolved in the "very near future," while another police source said the woman was said to be having "memory issues."
The Sabres released a statement indicating that they are aware of the allegations against Kane, a player they acquired in trade ahead of last season's NHL trade deadline.
"We take the allegation made today against Evander Kane very seriously," the Sabres said, per Graham. "We are gathering facts and have been in touch with the NHL and Evander's representatives. Until we have more information we will not have any additional comment."
Kane is to be represented by Paul J. Cambria, the same attorney who represented Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane during his own sexual assault investigation, according to The News, though Camrbia declined comment.
Kane was absent from Sabres practice Sunday, according to WGR 550, which the team indicated was for "personal reasons."
