Matt Barnes and Derek Fisher were involved in an off the court incident back in the beginning of October and at that time the NBA said they were investigating the incident to see if any punishment was warranted. Almost three months later and the situation was almost completely forgotten by most but now the NBA has finally decided to take action as they plan to suspend Barnes, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
The suspension will reportedly be for two games and it stems from Barnes' ex-wife Gloria Govan dating New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher. Govan stars on "Basketball Wives LA" and after she and Barnes split up she has been seeing Fisher who is also recently divorced. Barnes found out from one of his kids one day that Fisher was over his house with Govan and he reportedly lost it and went to the house to confront Fisher. Fisher had to miss a few days with the Knicks in the preseason because of what was considered a personal issue, but the incident with Barnes was the reason.
Fisher did not press charges on Barnes for the incident but Govan was expected to get a restraining order against Barnes. Barnes and Fisher were teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers for two seasons back in 2010 until 2012.
Barnes is in his first season with the Memphis Grizzlies after being traded by the Los Angeles Clippers and he has played pretty well for a struggling Memphis team. Barnes has recently been inserted into the starting lineup at the power forward spot over Zach Randolph and the team has played better since making the change. Through 33 games Barnes is averaging 8.6 points and 5.0 rebounds in 25.6 minutes per game while making just 32 percent of his threes. If the suspension holds up Barnes will lose about $64,000 in salary for the two games missed.
