Cleaning And Organizing: 10 Items To Purge From Your Closet Now To Welcome New Year (PHOTO)

While "spring cleaning" isn't quite in season, it's nice to welcome the New Year with a clean and well-organized closet. There are likely to be some items in there that you might need to eliminate and, if not, to make room for new stuff for next year. Your old, unused and unnecessary items might have other uses.

These are the 10 things you need to purge from your closet now:

- Distressed jeans that look too ripped to actually look cool. If they look worse than rags, it's time to throw them out.

- Cotton white shirts that look more like gray or yellow. Buy new shirts instead. (They're actually on sale at H & M right now!)

- Pilled sweater and coats, especially if there isn't enough de-pilling you can do to bring it back to form.

- Blouses with missing buttons. "You're never going to find that exact button," said closet expert Elaine Wang Yu via The Stir. Donate instead.

- Socks with no pair. You can recycle into rags or as clothing for your smaller pets during the cold. You can even try out any of these amazing ideas for old socks below.

- Shoes that have given you blisters more than you were actually able to wear them. Blisters can lead to serious medical infection, according to Foot Vitals. Don't risk it anymore. Give them away.

- Worn out bags with its inside zippers broken or its leather chipping off. Did a car run over it? Throw it out.

- Items you've bought because it's the fad. The fad died down already, so it's time to retire that big-ribboned hair piece or that designer collaboration dress that had bright and bold colors. You're likely not going to wear it again.

- Any piece of clothing you bought to wear at "some event," but you never did. Stop holding on and give the dress away already.

- Evening bags that are too tiny to be ever useful. Your 5-year-old daughter or niece might love them more.
