The Dallas Cowboys have placed star wide receiver Dez Bryant on injured reserve, ending his 2015 season, according to the Cowboy's team website. Bryant is expected to have another procedure on both his foot and/or ankle, but the surgeries reportedly are not major and will not impact his offseason, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.
"We anticipate him having something done to both the foot and ankle here in the next week or so," said head coach Jason Garrett, via the Cowboys' team website. "It had been bothering him. We just felt like we wanted to go back and look at it. We have to go back and help him get both the foot and the ankle healed up. It was not in the best interest of Dez or our football team to have him play this Sunday."
It's been a disappointing season in Dallas, as the Cowboys will finish in last place in the NFC East after winning the division a year ago. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes the addition of a quarterback is a high priority for the team this offseason, and after losing quarterback Tony Romo twice in one season with a broken collarbone, many expect the team to find his future replacement.
While the Cowboys may be searching for their future quarterback they have to wonder about Bryant's future, as he only played in nine games this season. Bryant signed a five-year, $70 million contract with $45 million guaranteed back in July, and Cowboys fans are hoping the star wide out can return to form in 2016.
Bryant was clearly not the same dynamic player on the field since suffering the injury in Week One, and for first time in his NFL career was held under 500 receiving yards in a season. The Cowboys top wide receiver only caught 31 passes for 401 yards and scored three touchdowns.
