Best Buy has lowered the cost of Google's latest Nexus 5 smartphone by almost 50 percent, from $800 to $450. While it seems more reasonable now, the offer still fails to beat what Google is offering via Play Store, $350 off-contract.
Google decided to announce its Nexus 5 smartphone during the Halloween season. The smartphone was listed out of stock within hours of its launching but there are other sources you can get your latest Nexus smartphone from, provided you are willing to pay extra. Google's next iteration of Nexus smartphone is available with Best Buy, but with a slashed price.
Best Buy lowered the price of Nexus 5 smartphone from an outrageous $800 to a more reasonable $450, reports PCMag. This is still an extra $100 than what Google would charge you for the same 16GB version, if the device was available on Play Store.
It is still unclear if Best Buy's initial pricing was a typo or an intended move. But the retailer has not issued a statement or an apology following the price drop. However, the initial pricing of the device would had been more expensive than the popular iPhone 5S with similar storage via T-Mobile, which comes for $650 without a contract.
Best Buy is offering the Sprint version of Nexus 5 16GB, off-contract for $450. Buyers can also order the device directly from the carrier as it is charging a similar price. But if you are willing to sign a new two-year contract with Sprint to get your new Nexus 5, then the carrier will drop the charge off to $200 and an additional $50 for mail-in orders.
As demand for Nexus 5 continues to soar and with Sprint being the only carrier offering Nexus 5, it is likely the carrier will have a head start. AT&T and long-time partner Verizon have dropped off the chart to offer Nexus 5 but T-Mobile may offer the new device. If it does, the price of the Nexus 5 will probably go further down considering T-Mo's history of offering competitive prices.
