'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" Release Date: Konami Sets Window for Launch

Konami has announced a release window for the release of the upcoming title Metal Gear Solid V, prologue "Ground Zeroes." The game is now slated to release in the Spring of 2014.

According to series creator Hideo Kokima, further details that link Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is expected to hit store shelves later next year including how the title will change as a result of the new open world format.

"The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine have allowed me to tell the new story in a new way," he says. "There will be a significant difference in what The Phantom Pain brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential. As such, Ground Zeroes has been designed to introduce key elements, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game will offer."

Ground Zeroes will consist of just one mission, a Cuban rescue. The mission, according to IGN, has been "extensively demoed this year" including having spots at the Tokyo Game Show in September. It will be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as next-generation consoles the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One later in the Spring. In the U.S. the game will cost $19.99 for older generation consoles and $29.99 for the newer generation consoles. In the U.K. it will cost £19.99 and £29.99

The game will hold the title as the fifth installment in the popular Metal Gear Solid franchise. However, this is not the first game in the same Metal Gear universe since the release of the award-winning fourth title. A game title "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" came out last year. The game's tactical espionage tradition was done away with in favor of more of a hack and slash. The title character was not Solid Snake as it had been in previous games and instead focused on the cyborg ninja Riden. The new game will revert back to the same type of game play found in the fourth Metal Gear Solid.
