Tiger Woods is number one in the world again but a recent Nike Ad might throw the superstar back in the midst of controversy, according to ESPN.com
A new add from sports apparel giant Nike, features a picture of Woods kneeling and surveying the golf course. Plastered over the picture in huge letters is a quote from Woods which says, “Winning Takes Care of Everything.”
The ad has caused frenzy over the social media landscape, after being posted on both Facebook and Twitter. It is supposed to represent how Woods has fought threw his recent struggles on and off the golf cours, while climbing his way back to the top.
However, many believe it refers to his public image—which took a major hit after his martial indiscretions became public.
The ad, which has gained more than 8,000 likes and 2,000 shares on Facebook, has received various types of comments on the social networking site. Some comments come from fans of Woods who are commending him for getting back to Number One. Others condemned the ad being inappropriate considering the previous scandal.
There was not much difference on Twitter, as those viewed the ad disagreed with Nike’s use of words.
"I understand Nike is a business, but the Tiger Woods ad is beyond irresponsible," said Nancy Grace who goes by the twitter handle @mtrunnergirl.
Joshua Smith, whose twitter handle is @yeshuasmith tweeted, “Nike's new ad is hilariously blatant and their feigned ignorance of its double meaning is even better."
Beth Gast, spokesman for Nike issued a statement in light of the explosion on social media. "Tiger has always said he competes to win. When asked about his goals such as getting back to No. 1, he has said consistently winning is the way to get there. The statement references that sentiment and is a salute to his athletic performance."
Tiger Woods reclaimed his number one status after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida.
