The conflicting rumors surrounding Alex Gordon this offseason had many wondering where he'd land in free agency. He was always open to a reunion with the Kansas City Royals, but it was believed they didn't have the spending power to re-sign the MLB's top left fielder.
Well, Royals general manager Dayton Moore made it happen. Gordon has agreed to a multi-year contract with Kansas City, according to Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com, and the deal is reportedly for four years and in the "low-$70 million range," according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Earlier this morning Passan reported that there was "increasingly strong sentiment among competitors" that Gordon would return to the Royals.
The club has yet to confirm the deal with Gordon.
Gordon, who will be 32 next month, was reportedly seeking a contract that would pay him an average annual salary of $20 million. Previous rumors suggested the Royals were "lowballing" him with four-year offers in the $50 million range and that the team had "no shot" of retaining him if that were to be the case.
However, last week Gordon came out and said the Royals were not out of the discussion in terms of his free agent endeavors despite a number of other MLB clubs such as the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and others having been linked to the outfielder in rumors.
Gordon played a big role in the Royals' run to their first World Series title since 1985 this past season. Although he missed two months due to a groin injury, he batted .271/.377/.432 with 40 runs scored, 13 home runs and 48 RBI in 104 regular season games and hit a crucial game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth of Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets, which helped the Royals win in extras.
Flanagan said an announcement is likely coming today, so stay tuned for updates.
