The Cleveland Browns will reportedly interview Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson for their head coaching position, according to ESPN's Ed Werder. The Browns are in total overhaul mode this offseason, as they have fired both their head coach and general manager, and have hired chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta, formerly of the New York Mets, and Oakland A's and "Moneyball" fame.
Henderson is reportedly expected to interview for the Browns head coaching position this Friday, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson. While the move seems outside the box, Henderson clearly can relate to players, as he played in the NFL for eight seasons and has had success at the next level. Coaches don't tend to make the jump from position coach to head coach too often, but Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is a perfect example of someone successfully making that leap.
While the Cowboys clearly had a difficult season this year, finishing with just a 4-12 record, their pass defense was one of the only bright spots on the team. Their secondary was ranked fifth in the league in terms of yards per game, and it's not outside the realm of possibility to think that the Browns organization could take a leap on him.
Henderson will likely need to have an impressive interview to be a contender for the head coaching position, and reports have surfaced that the organization could be interested in former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. It will be interesting to follow what happens in Cleveland, as their first-round quarterback is likely on his way out the door, and the organization is looking for its eighth head coach since 2001.
