Software Designed To Track Employees' Sitting Habits

Employers will soon be able to track your lack of movement around the office thanks to new software announced today. Dubbed the "connected caster" by Fox 5 News, OfficeIQ works with a device that can be put onto the underside of an office chair to keep track of how long someone has been sitting.

The connected workplace software system was developed by Humanscale and Tome Inc., according to a press release. The device uses sensor technology, and employers can opt in to get real-time information about the use of their workstations, said Humanscale. The device will cost about $125 each, according to PC World. The sensor will feed information back to a web app or to a smartphone. Humanscale told media that individual information will be protected and employers only receive grouped data.

"OfficeIQ is in line with our focus on solutions that are inherently simple and easy to use, yet have a real impact on wellness in the workplace," said Humanscale founder and CEO Robert King. "No one is talking about utilization, but this is critical data for the evolving office environment. It can generate cost savings and help employers see real returns on their investments in developing healthier and happier places to work."

The companies will be showing off the software at the International Consumer Electronics Show this week, particularly how it can be used to track conference attendance.
