The 2016 MLB Hall of Fame class is here. The Baseball Writers Association of America has chosen Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza to be enshrined in Cooperstown.
Griffey earned the highest vote percentage of any Hall of Famer in MLB history with 99.3%. The 22-year MLB veteran won the AL MVP during the 1997 season after hitting .304/.382/.646 with 125 runs scored, 56 home runs and 147 RBI. He was also a 13-time All-Star, a 10-time Gold Glove winner in center field and a seven-time Silver Slugger winner.
His career stats are among the most impressive all-time:
.284/.370/.538 with 1,662 runs scored, 630 home runs, 1,836 RBI and 184 stolen bases in 2,671 games
Earlier today ESPN's Jim Caple published his "24 of Ken Griffey Jr.'s most remarkable feats," which you can read here.
Here's a cool highlight reel of Griffey Jr.'s career:
As for Piazza, his election to the Hall of Fame is three years overdue. The greatest hitting catcher of all-time received 83% of the vote after an illustrious 16-year MLB career. The former Los Angeles Dodger and New York Met won NL Rookie of the Year in 1993. He was also a 12-time All-Star, 10-time Silver Slugger winner and finished top-five in the MVP voting four times.
Here are his career stats:
.308/.377/.545 with 1,048 runs scored, 427 home runs and 1,335 RBI in 1,912 games
Piazza was previously believed to be a victim of the steroid era, as many voters are hesitant and/or unwilling to select a player who was associated with that dark time in baseball. However, he officially overcame the stigma today and will be standing at the podium in Cooperstown come July.
And here's his cool highlight reel:
