The New York Knicks lost a very close game on Fridaty night to the San Antonio Spurs and although they couldn't pull off the upset there is no denying how much they have improved this season. Despite the improvement, the Knicks still have some holes on the team, most notably at the guard position. New York has been scouring the trade market for a guard to help aid its run towards a playoff spot recently. For now though it seems like they will look to 10-day contracts to try and bolster the position as they have interest in Toure Murry, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
The Knicks have had only 14 players on their roster since training camp ended but have been hesitant to fill the position. Last season the Knicks were extremely successful in handing out 10-day contracts as Langston Galloway, Lance Thomas and Lou Amundson, who all received 10-day contracts, are still on the team. Galloway and Thomas specifically have been key contributors so far this season so they are hoping to have similar success this season.
Murry previously drew interest from one of his other former teams, the Utah Jazz, earlier this season but nothing came of that. Murry started his NBA career with the Knicks back in 2013-14 when he played a limited role in 51 games. Since then Murry hasn't been able top stick in the NBA as he has played in just five games since, but it seems like another chance is coming.
Murry was in training camp this offseason with the Washington Wizards but he was cut just days before the season began. Since then Murry has been playing in the D-League for the Texas Legends and has had a very nice season so far. In 17 games Murry is averaging 14.5 points, 6.6 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 35 percent from three.
Murry obviously would not be guaranteed a role with the Knicks should he sign a contract but the Knicks have struggled for depth in the backcourt. Arron Afflalo, Jose Calderon and Galloway are all going to get their minutes but besides them it has been a struggle, specifically the backup point guard spot. Jerian Grant has struggled so far this season, as you would expect from a rookie, so it might be good for the Knicks to bring in another option at the backup point like Murry. If signed, Murry might have a chance to prove he belongs with the team long-term the way Galloway, Thomas and Amundson did last season.
