It seems like 2016 would be a year of virtual reality, as prominent smartphone maker HTC has announced that it would be accepting pre-orders for its virtual reality system, the HTC Vive, on Feb. 29, according to USA Today. Produced hand-in-hand with popular video game developer Valve Software, the HTC Vive has managed to gain a very prominent following, mainly thanks to its ability to give users a "full room experience."
Unlike its main competitor, the Oculus Rift, the Vive system features two made-for-VR motion controllers and two "Lighthouse" base stations that track the movement of a player as he or she moves around the room in virtual reality, reports PC World.
HTC has suggested that gamers would need a clear 15-by-15-foot open space in order to get the complete "room-scale" Vive experience.
Apart from the extremely immersive gameplay that the system promises, the Vive also features a front-facing camera, enabling users to see their physical surroundings while wearing the VR headset. Such a system would enable users to sit down, eat, and continue interacting with other even while wearing the device, according to The Telegraph.
Despite the definite pre-order date for the device, HTC has not revealed the final price of the Vive system, though speculations are abounding that due to its more complex and full-room VR feature, the Vive would probably cost significantly more than the Oculus Rift, which is already priced a hefty $599 per unit.
The HTC Vive is expected to be officially launched in April 2016.
