Despite the rumors that John Calipari may be interested in returning to the NBA, the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program has a lot going for them right now. They are in contention for a national championship almost every year due to the massive talent Calipari brings in and they are probably the most popular team in college basketball. Calipari's program also has the backing of a huge music star in Drake which would seem like a good thing but maybe it isn't so good as Drake was involved in another incident where Kentucky had to self-report a violation, according to Jerry Tipton and Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Ledger.
This all stems from a concert Drake had back on May 29, 2015 in Chicago. Kentucky told the NCAA that they had committed a "Level III violation" involving Drake giving a player preferential treatment. Kentucky has not commented on the violations. At the time they self-reported the violations the player who was given the "preferential treatment" was not named but Tyler Ulis posted a picture of him and Drake together after the concert. Ulis is from Chicago and reportedly met with Drake after the concert for three or four hours before taking the picture.
A Level III violation is one of the lesser violations that a school can commit according to the NCAA. The rulebook states that a Level III violation is "isolated or limited in nature" and that any competitive or recruiting advantage is "minimal." Despite the non-serious nature of the violations this isn't the first time Kentucky had to self-report violations involving Drake.
Drake attended Big Blue Madness back in 2014 where he posed for pictures with several players including Kentucky recruit Charles Matthews which led to another Level III violation. After that first violation it was reported that Kentucky's compliance office sent Drake a cease-and desist letter. Coach Calipari though calmed things down when he tweeted that everything is just fine between Kentucky and Drake.
"Just so everyone knows, my dear friend @Drake took pics with fans as well as a couple guys as he was leaving the arena after Madness. There are no issues with @Drake and UK, and Drake is and always will be part of our Big Blue family," tweeted Calipari.
It doesn't seem like Drake's involvement and fandom of the Wildcats will end but it certainly looks like he needs to be more careful. Take a look at the picture in question below.
