The San Francisco 49ers are out of the running for Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, according to a report from Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. Kawakami adds at the team "could double-back," but that is sounds like their pursuit of Jackson is "over for now."
Jackson, the Bengals offensive coordinator since 2014, was said to be the "clear frontrunner" for the Niners job as early as Tuesday morning, but "something happened" within the last few days to change that, per Kawakami.
On the other hand, Michael Silver of Sports Illustrated tweeted Tuesday that "no one" is out, seemingly indicating that Jackson remains a candidate.
The Niners have, to this point, shown interest in Bills assistant head coach Anthony Lynn, Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and former Eagles head coach/personnel czar Chip Kelly, per Pro Football Talk, after firing Jim Tomsula after one season.
The Browns were said to be chasing Jackson, who has been drawing interest from a variety of places, "aggressively," even going so far as to offer him at least partial control of personnel.
Jackson is set to interview with the Giants on Thursday.
