The King of Atlantis finally has his Queen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has tabbed Amber Heard ("The Danish Girl") as the female lead opposite Jason Momoa ("Game of Thrones") in director James Wan's upcoming "Aquaman" movie. Heard will take on the role of Mera, Aquaman's love interest who goes on to become the Queen of Atlantis. Heard will reportedly debut the character in Zack Snyder's "Justice League: Part I."
Momoa will make his brief DC Extended Universe debut as Aquaman in March's "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." In the comics, the character was a founding member of the Justice League. His role in the DCEU will serve as the first big screen live-action adaptation of the character. His only other live-action appearance came in the WB's "Smallville," though a spinoff series for the character was in the works for a time.
Warner Bros. is currently developing two separate scripts for "Aquaman's" standalone movie. Kurt Johnstad ("300") is writing one while David Leslie Johnson ("Wrath of the Titans") is penning the other. Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are attached as producers.
"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" will arrive on march 25. It will be followed by "Justice League: Part I" on Nov. 10, 2017. The "Aquaman" solo film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27, 2018 with "Justice League: Part II" coming to theaters on June 14, 2019.
