Powerball Winners 2016: Record $1.6 Billion Split Between 3 Winners In 3 States

This week, three very lucky ticket holders have made history. Beating the 1-in-292.2 million odds of winning the biggest Powerball jackpot in American history, three ticket holders from California, Florida and Tennessee are set to split the record $1.6 billion Powerball lottery jackpot, according to USA Today.

The amount has lured millions of hopefuls into a buying frenzy, which went on until the very last moments before the fateful draw. The winning numbers were: 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and Powerball 10.

Lottery officials announced that one of the winning tickets was sold at a 7-Eleven store in Chino Hills, Calif., a suburban community of 77,000 residents east of Los Angeles. Another was sold at a Publix grocery store in Melbourne Beach, Fla., as well as locations in Munford, Tenn., reports Reuters. Despite the jackpot reaching into the billions, Lottery officials stated that the lump-sum cash value of the jackpot is valued at $930 million, which leaves each lucky winner with about $310 million each.

After paying the 39.6 percent federal income tax for their prize money, each of the Powerball winners would ultimately take home $187.2 million, which could be paid through a multi-year annuity or a lump-sum cash payment, according to CNN Money. As of the moment, however, none of the three lucky winners have stepped forward to claim their prize.

The popular lottery is currently played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., as well as two U.S. territories.
