The New England Patriots have reportedly signed wide receiver Keshawn Martin to a two-year, $3 million contract extension through the 2017 season, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
The Patriots traded for Martin from the Houston Texans back in September, and he has stepped up in his first season in New England. The Patriots have dealt with their share of injuries this year, and Martin has been a great fill in player for the Patriots, as he has caught 24 passes for 269 yards and scored two touchdowns.
The Patriots have a lot of question marks going into their matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, and they are facing the hottest team in football. Patriots wide receivers Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola were limited in practice this week, and star tight end Rob Gronkowski is expected to play today despite pain in both his knee and back, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.
It's interesting that reports of Martin's contract extension come out on the same day New England faces Kansas City in a playoff game. Head coach Bill Belichick will look to use his top-tier weapons in Edelman and Gronkowski Saturday, but don't be surprised if Martin gets involved, as the Patriots surely believe that he can be an impact player for their offense.
