25 People Arrested In Spain For Trafficking Nigerian Women for Sex Trade

The Spanish police has arrested a group of Nigerians for human trafficking and money laundering.

Spanish Police arrested around 25 people for human trafficking. The group is said to be in prostitute trading and Internet fraud and smuggles Nigerian women into the country for the trade.

The gang members were arrested from different places in Spain- Madrid, Toledo, Cantabria and Palma de Mallorca. The police were able to rescue five women. The women rescued in the raid were promised jobs in Europe. They were first made to travel to Brazil or Mexico with false documents. Later they were sent off to European countries to work as prostitutes.

The group has been in operation since 1990. They are also into Internet fraud and make false promises of jobs in return for money.

Nearly 100 vans filled with luxury goods were also seized. Apparently the profits were used to buy items to trade in Nigeria. The luxury items included expensive television sets and alcohol. The goods were worth around $6.6 million. Apart from these vans another 26 vans were confiscated at the port of Valencia.

Eight of the 25 people caught in Spain did not have permits to stay in the country.

This is not the first time that European countries are in the headlines for human trafficking. An August case hearing revealed that in 2011 Chinese citizens were brought to work as prostitutes in U.S. and Europe, according to a recent post on Cnn.

Sexual exploitation and forced labor cases have shown an upward curve in Spain with increasing number of cases reported in recent years.
