Sony Officially Lays Out Android Upgrade Roadmap; High-End Xperia Smartphones Getting Lucky

Sony has finally let the cat out of the bag by officially confirming the list of Xperia smartphones and tablets that will be first upgraded to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean starting December.

Sony, one of the leading smartphone making companies, has announced the list of devices that will be upgraded to Google's Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, starting December. But that's not it, the Japanese manufacturer also became the first company to spill the beans about its Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade plan.

Google announced its latest version of Android operating system, dubbed as KitKat, alongside its much-speculated Nexus 5 smartphone. While Google is yet to bring the update to its other devices, Sony has revealed its plans to upgrade its Xperia lineup with KitKat. However, before that happens, Sony wants its customers to try out the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

According to the company's blog post, Sony will introduce the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to its Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Tablet Z. The update will be rolled out starting next month, but users are likely to get it based on their region and carrier. While most of its high-end Xperia smartphones and tablets are included in the list, Sony hasn't forgotten about its other devices, the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V. These devices will be skipping a software upgrade to get the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

On the most interesting part, Sony also revealed its list of devices that will first get the Google's latest Android KitKat.

"We're also happy to tell you about the first raft of Xperia products that we'll make Android 4.4 Kit Kat available for - they are: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1," Sony said in its post.

Specific date for the KitKat roll out was not announced but the company asked its customers to stay tuned for more news, which we assume will happen only after Google initiates its roll-out for Nexus smartphones. At least, Sony took the initiative to let its customers know about the upgrade, so we give Sony a high-five on this one.
