Death Row Inmate Wishes To Donate His Organs After Execution

Ronald Phillips, a 40 year-old convicted child molester and killer, asked to donate his organs on Monday after his execution on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

Phillips was sentenced to death after being convicted of raping and killing his former girlfriend's three-year-old child in Akron, Ohio in 1993, the AP reported. Phillips hit the toddler in the head, face and stomach, threw her against the walls and anally raped her, according to a confession given to the police.

In a letter sent to the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction by his lawyer, Phillips requested his organs be donated to help his mother, who has kidney disease and sister who is currently undergoing dialysis, according to the AP.

The letter also stated that if it is not possible he would also be willing to donate his organs to other individuals, the AP reported.

"Ron is making this generous request without any conditions or expectations," according to the letter obtained by the AP. "He is nonetheless willing to do whatever is necessary to enable as many people as possible to benefit from his death," the letter said.

Lisa Largos, Phillips' lawyer, said all his appeals have been dropped and insisted the inmate just wants to do one good thing before he goes and is not looking to delay the execution.

"Ron just wants to be able to do a charitable act and help bring any closure to the victim's family that he can," she said in an interview, according to the AP.

Last week, Phillip's request for mercy was denied by John Kasich, the governor of Ohio, the AP reported.

Phillip's scheduled execution by untried injection of a sedative and painkiller is set for Thursday. The injection has never been used in a United States execution before.
