If you've been binge watching Netflix's hit docuseries "Making a Murderer," then you're well aware of Steven Avery- the man who spent 18 years in prison after he was wrongfully accused and convicted of raping a woman in 1985, only to be released and then accused and convicted of the 2006 rape, murder and mutilation of photographer Teresa Halbach. When his 26-year-old nephew Brendan Dassey confessed that he helped his uncle carry out the crime, he was also sentenced to life in prison, and news just broke that he has been quietly moved to a new prison.
Dassey was secretly transferred on Wednesday from Green Bay Correctional Institution to Columbia Correctional Institution, which is a maximum security prison about 125 miles away in Wisconsin, according to TMZ. A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections said that inmate transfers are common but would not give any more details.
Sources close to Dassey have said that the move was for several reasons, and that the main reason was because of the growing popularity of "Making a Murderer." With it being such a well-known case now, Dassey has become a high-profile convict and maximum security has become a necessity.
Dassey's half-brother Brad recently dropped a rap titled "They Didn't Do It" defending Brendan and Avery, trying to bring justice to his family, as HNGN previously reported. "The family's just gone through so much hell," Brad said on his decision to make the song. "It's incredible...There needs to be a strong voice really representing him and staying strong for him. I just wanted to speak out on his behalf and just root for him."
