Troy Polamalu Haircut 2013: Steelers Safety Cuts Famous Locks First Time in a Decade to Support Troops (VIDEO)

Troy Polamalu cut his hair for the first time in over a decade. Before you start panicking and freaking out, Polamalu - who is known for his long, long locks - didn't cut all his hair. In fact he barely cut it at all.

The Pittsburgh Steeler's strong safety chopped off a single, 3-inch lock of hair for the "Veterans of Foreign Wars' Mane Event," a seven-week campaign that raises awareness of Veterans issues.

"I am taking the pledge to cut my hair this Veterans Day to show my support for our veterans and raise awareness for the struggles they are facing," he said on his VFW donation page. "My hair gets a lot of attention, and by cutting it after more than ten years, it is my hope that I can help bring to light the fate of our country's veterans."

The 32-year-old football player cut his hair in front of a large crowd at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field. According to Trib Live, Veterans affairs is something close to Polamalu and his wife, Theodora. The couple founded an organization called Harry Panos Fund for Veterans, which aids charities that offers help to the military. The organization is named after Theodoras's grandfather, who was a World War II veteran,

"This is a subject very near to me heart. I was initially inspired to help our veterans after hearing stories of what my grandfather endured during and after WWII," he continued to write. "From that point onwards, my wife Theodora and I have been dedicated to helping those who bravely served for our country."

Polamalu explained to Trib Live that he feels like soldiers are forgotten about once they are done with service.

"I don't think anybody could argue the fact they they've done more or this country than any other person," he said.

The event was also sponsored in part by Head & Shoulders, the shampoo for which Polamalu has been a spokesman for years.
