Southern Accent Voted America's Sexiest, Are We Attracted to Stereotypes?

According to a new survey done by Cupid.com, the most sexy U.S. accent by a landslide is the Southern accent, Time magazine reports.

Out of 2,000 men and women polled on which regional accent they found most attractive, 36.5 percent voted for Southern, most favored by males (45 percent male/28 percent female), with a New York accent following behind at 16.5 percent, favored by 23 percent of females. Other top picks included Western, New England and New Jersey, while the Mid-Atlantic accent came in 8th place with just 4 percent of votes.

Famous women with a distinct Southern drawl include Louisana native Britney Spears and Tennessee-raised Miley Cyrus, while stars with New York accents like Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. may be of particular interest to (presumably) straight women.

"Your date's accent may not seem like a vital detail - especially when meeting someone online - but your subconscious reaction when they speak could make or break a relationship," Cupid.com said in a press release. "It seems that when it comes to love, daters are looking for partners who conform to the gender stereotypes of softly-spoken women and tough-talking men."
