The Cleveland Cavaliers currently have the best record in the Eastern Conference at 30-11 and look to be the clear favorites from the East to make it back to the NBA Finals. Despite all of that success though, the Cavaliers still are not satisfied as they have made a head coaching change. David Blatt has been fired and assistant coach Tyronn Lue will become the teams new head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
Blatt was hired by the Cavaliers in the summer of 2014 before they were sure LeBron James was coming back and his first NBA job wasn't easy for him. Yes Cleveland made it to the NBA Finals in his first season, but Blatt faced a lot of scrutiny for some of his decisions and the fact that it looked like LeBron was coaching the team. There was some definite friction between the star player and the head coach but even after the season was over the Cavaliers decided to retain Blatt.
The Cavaliers have played well so far this season but the final straw might have been the blowout loss they suffered at home at the hands of the Golden State Warriors earlier this week. Blatt finishes his stint with the Cavaliers with an 83-40 regular season record and also was at the helm for a trip to the finals where they won two games.
Tyronn Lue will now take over for Blatt but he will not be considered an interim head coach as he has reportedly agreed to a multi-year deal with the team to serve as the head coach. Lue was Blatt's top assistant and has been an assistant in the league for four plus years before now getting his shot to be the head man. This is his second season as the associate head coach for the Cavaliers but he will now get the opportunity at age 38 to show what he can do running the team.
