A propane tank outside of the Jackson County District Attorney's Office in Medford, Ore. caused an explosion early Wednesday morning.
According to a federal law enforcement official who spoke to CBS' local station in the southern Oregon city, an unknown improvised explosive blew up at around 4:30 a.m. at the office of the DA, located in Medford's busy downtown area.
The city's police, along with Jackson County sheriff's deputies, discovered an 11-pound propane tank in flames at the site of the explosion, along with a fire on the outside of the government building. A few windows at the DA's office were broken, shattered glass littering the ground below.
According to Medford police spokesperson Lt. Mike Budreau, no one was inside the building at the time of the blast. He also added that law enforcement officials believed the suspected bomber tried to completely detonate the propane tank, but did not succeed.
"We got a lucky break," Budreau told KOIN, saying that there could have been much more devastating damage done to the offices at West 10th Street had the propane tank fully exploded.
Following further investigations at other buildings nearby, police stated that they didn't find any other questionable materials.
Neighbors who spoke with KTVL said that the explosion shook them from their sleep. An eyewitness told KVAL that they saw a person fleeing from the scene wearing all-black clothing and holding a flashlight.
